why this book

I am trying to encourage students to read more often. One of their concerns is the lack of diversity in the books we have in the class. I have one copy of this books and 4 students have signed it out already. The students seem to relate to the character. We do live in a urban community that faces a lot of the same problems. I want to start doing literacy circles and I think this will be the perfect book to start
